BOOKS COMPLIMENTARY ABOUT THE ARAB WORLD BANNED!

bannedbooks

Barzipan Publishing has three of its leading titles banned in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates

PRESS RELEASE     18th August 2014

When misunderstanding between the West and the Arab world is at its height, the censorship of books that promote cross-cultural understanding could not come at a worst time. All three authors have lived and worked in the Arab world and their writing emphasises the similarities between the different cultures instead of the differences perceived by so many.

While banning romance novels is hardly surprising, the three authors are disappointed that the passion and admiration they express for their adopted countries will not be read in the Arab world.

Fibs, Fact and Farces: Tales from the Arab World is a collection of hilarious stories by John Carter that highlight not only the essential dottiness of his own country’s activities in the Arab world, but also unveil the tremendous humour that the Arabs themselves possess. It was applauded by Matthew Parris who said,“Formal history sometimes misses the humour, the misunderstandings and the flashes of insight…. John Carter lays out a rich store”.

Anywhere But Saudi Arabia! Experiences of a once reluctant expat is told with the wit and stylishness for which Kathy Cuddihy is well known and is a treasure for all who know and love the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. At times hilarious, at times shocking, but always honest and entertaining, Kathy Cuddihy’s story is infused with deep affection for Saudi Arabia.

Seven Bands of Gold: First Love is a romantic tale of shy and naïve 17-year-old Sally whose first love affair ends in disaster, sending her fleeing the heartache to visit her friend in the Middle East. Sally learns to love the desert sheikhdom and its people – and one person in particular – as she finds independence and a renewed self-confidence. Jenny Lees’ second book in the quartet, Sensual Love, is to be published in November 2014 and will not be submitted for censorship approval in the Arab world.

Anywhere but Saudi Arabia … a terrific review from the Arabian Magazine

Editor of The Arabian Magazine reviews Anywhere but Saudi Arabia

Based in Saudi Arabia, this book is a real page turner. This account by Kathy Cuddihy tells of her experience of moving to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 1976.

Kathy’s husband, Sean, was offered a transfer to Riyadh and while Kathy agreed, it was with the stipulation that it was “only for two years, not a minute longer”. However, it would be 24 years before Kathy and her husband finally left the country and this is an honest, humorous and frank account of their time there. A writer by trade, it is little wonder that Anywhere but Saudi Arabia is so descriptive and enjoyable.

Anyone who has visited Saudi Arabia will appreciate the concerns that Kathy felt and, as the book continues, you also start to appreciate the country through different eyes. Again, this book is a great read for anyone with a passion for the Middle East, and it is easily one of the most enjoyable books that I have read for a long time.

Jenny Lees dispels rumour of Seven Bands of Gold being autobiographical

An article this week in the Hereford Times created the opportunity for author Jenny Lees to dismiss the rumours of it being autobiographical.

Seven Bands of Gold: First Love was described by the paper as “the steamy tale of a young girl who, after suffering heartache closer to home finds excitement in the Middle East”.

An explicit tale of the loss of innocence – Seven Bands of Gold: First Love

Launch offer 25% off for next 5 days!

Seven Bands of Gold: First Love is the debut novel of born storyteller Jenny Lees. This bumper book of 448 pages is by no means autobiographical but it would not ring with such passion and authenticity had not the author experienced some of the same agony and ecstasy as her heroine. The explicit tale of the loss of innocence is unputdownable – you will be hooked from the first chapter and begging for more – Book 2 Sensual Love wil be out in the spring and look out for Book 3: Forbidden Love and Book 4: Unending Love.

SevenBands1TLIt is the mid-1960s and 17-year-old Sally is living in leafy suburbia with her bourgeois mother, indulgent father and infuriating sister. Mrs Phillips, a strict Roman Catholic, worries constantly about what the neighbours think behind their twitching lace curtains and about Sally’s tomboyish ways. Having finished her convent education, Sally is shy and naive, and totally unconscious of her budding beauty. Her only sex education has been an excruciating lesson on the procreation of rabbits from the nuns, and her mother’s oblique warnings that ‘men only want one thing’. Quick to blush and innocent of the world, she is nonetheless intelligent and shows no interest in callow youths eager to date her, despite the encouragement of her best friend Caroline.

Then she meets Doug MacDonald and the urges that have lain dormant, anaesthetised by ignorance and Catholic angst, overpower her shyness and reserve. Almost overnight Sally blossoms, her inhibitions caressed away by the experienced hands of an accomplished lover. She falls deeply in love and, for the first time in his life it seems, so too does Doug. A trip to his Scottish home and a proposal of marriage form part of the whirlwind romance.

However, waiting in the wings to claim what she believes is hers is Moira, one of Doug’s many ex-girlfriends. A web of deceit woven by Moira sends Sally fleeing the heartache to visit her friend Caroline, who has married a diplomat and is now living in the Middle East. Sally learns to love the desert kingdom and its people – and one person in particular – as she finds independence and a renewed self-confidence.

White House Wit, Wisdom and Wisecracks published today by Barzipan

White House Wit, Wisdom and Wisecracks Shows Lighter Side of Presidents

WOW_coverCompiled by internationally-renowned journalists Phil Dampier and Ashley Walton, this new book showcases the wisdom and the side-splitting wit of US Presidents.

The book is a comprehensive collection of witty one-liners, historic pronouncements, personal insights and philosophical musings, complimented with cartoons by Richard Jolly. While recent Presidents have had their every gaffe covered on live television, even the earliest Presidents like Abraham Lincoln had a sparkling wit, ‘If I were two-faced, would I be wearing this one?’ and JFK, when asked how he became a war hero dryly replied, ‘It was involuntary. They sank my boat’.

“It also proves that, among their vast arsenal from small arms to nuclear war heads, humour is often a President’s best weapon. For example, Harry S. Truman retorted ‘You want a friend in Washington? Get a dog’, Ronald Reagan insisted ‘I have left orders to be awakened at any time in case of national emergency – even if I’m in a Cabinet meeting’ and Barack Obama lamented ‘I’m so over-exposed I’m making Paris Hilton look like a recluse’, says Phil Dampier.”

“What clearly emerges from the more serious quotations is how many of the problems faced by the earliest Presidents still resonate today, says Ashley Walton. When George Washington said ‘Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom’, Herbert Hoover declared ‘Blessed are the young, for they shall inherit the national debt’! This could easily have been written for the twenty-first century and it proves that all Presidents have shared the same style of humour.”

“We’ve got quotes ranging from the inspirational and the witty to others that will leave readers holding their foreheads in disbelief. Everyone will find something in this book, whether it makes you laugh, cry, muse or gawp in disbelief.” he adds.

White House Wit, Wisdom and Wisecracks is available to order now from Barzipan and will be despatched on November 22nd.
